About Aguada Fort
Aguada Fort is one of the largest influential forts of Goa. In year 1612, this grand fort was constructed against the Dutch and the Marathas. This is a 17-century forts abd built by the Portuguese. This old Portuguese fort sprawls on the beach south of Candolim at the shore of the Mandovi River. Main purpose to built this forts was prevent the entry of ships into the river Mandovi thus protecting old Goa from enemy attacks. This fort is divided in two segments: the upper part acted as fort and watering station, while the lower part served as a safe berth for Portuguese ships.
The name of this fort comes from the naturalistic springs within the fort that provided water to the fort and passing ships.Crews of passing ships would often visit to replenish their fresh water stores. The water of this spring is used to fill a water tank that is located within the fort and the capacity of this tank is 2,376,000 gallons. Fort also has a lighthouse. It is one of the first and oldest lighthouses built in Asia. The lighthouse is situated inside the fortress and looks down over the vast expanse of sea.
At present time much of the structure of this forts is serves as a prison and is out-of-bounds for travelers.The walls are 5 metres high and 1.3 metres wide and you can walk along the top. Even though major parts of the fort remains inaccessible. Fort Aguada has witnessed many historical battles and moments some of which have had a direct impact on the fort itself.
Main Attraction : Main attraction of Aguada Fort is a 4 storey Portuguese lighthouse that is built around 1864.
