About Arvalem Caves
Arvalem Caves are the ancient rock cut caves dating back to the 5-6 century. It is one of the popular tourist destinations in Goa that attracts tourists from far and near. The cave complex draws tourists and archeologists alike. Locally these caves is also known as Pandava caves. During the 12 year exile of Pandava, this cave have housed the Pandavas. These caves are not much big and there is nothing much to speak of in terms of architecture and sculpture.
Some people believed the origins of these caves is based on Buddhism. The wall of this caves Lingas sculpture is present. Arvalem Caves have five compartments and middle compartment includes the stone “Linga” which is held in great respect by devotees, which is till today regarded with great respect. In the second cave, the Shivalinga with a circular top is graven with an petrograph written in Sanskrit and Brahmi characters of the 7th century. Arvalem Caves have their mythological and religious importance, so that Hindu tourists is frequently visited this caves.
It is an ideal picnic spot, one might want to set aside an afternoon for a picnic at these caves and enjoy nature at its best.
