Buddha Purnima is a birth anniversary of Lord Buddha.

About Festival
Buddha Purnima or Buddha Jayanti is celebrated in honor of Lord Buddha founder of Buddhism. It is important festival of the Buddhists and is celebrated with great enthusiasm.On the same day , Buddha got enlightenment and also attained Nirvana or salvation.Some people believed that Yashodara Gautam's wife, his charioteer Channa and his horse Kantaka were born on the day of Buddha Purnima. On this day Pilgrims come from all over the world to Bodh Gaya for attend the Buddha Poornima celebration.


Gautama Buddha was born as prince Siddhartha in 566 B.C. in Kalpataru, now Lumbini in present day Nepal in Full Moon day of month Vaisakh (April or May).When young prince touched the pain and weakness of others, its mean that when he saw old age, disease and death then he decide to left his riches to become an ascetic and sought higher truth.After many years of meditation, study and sacrifice, he is known to have found the Nirvana and he became the Gautama Buddha to Siddhartha.


Celebration of Buddha Purnima
On this day is start with prayer, sermons on the life of Gautam Buddha, group meditation, continuous recitation of Buddhist scriptures, religious discourses, processions, worship of the statue of Buddha.Many people come in the Bodh Gaya to attend the Buddha Poornima celebration on birthday of Buddha.On this day the followers of Buddha bathe and wear only white clothes. Since Buddha attained enlightenment sitting under a Bodhi (Pipal) tree, special care is taken in watering and tending Bodhi trees.On this day this tree is also decorated with the light lamps and coloured flags.


On the day of Buddha Purnima, Buddhists eat kheer, rice cooked in milk and sugar and distribute it to poor people.In most of the Buddhist countries the villages, streets, roads, temples and houses are brightly illuminated with color Lanterns, electric lights and colorful decorations.


Five principle of Buddhists or Panchsheel
Not to lie
Not to steal
Not to take life
Not to commit adultery
Not to consume liquor or other intoxicants


On this day a fair is also held in Lumbini that is the birth place of Lord Buddha.This is very important for Buddhists because it is a thrice-blessed day for the Buddhists.
