Akola is a district of state of Maharashtra and city of Akola is the district headquarters. Akola district forms the central part of Amravati Division, and was a former British Raj Berar Province.

Geography of Akola
Geographical area of Akola 5417 Sq. K.M.  Akola district is bounded on the north side by Amravati District, to the south side by Washim District, to the east side by Amravati District and by Washim District and to the west side by Buldhana District. Washim was earlier a part of Akola.

Main Rivers : Purna and the Penganga are the main rivers of this district.And  tributaries of these two rivers are Katepurna, Shahanur, Morna,Mun,Nand, Man and Uma, which are the tributaries of the Purna rivers, and the Adan, the Arna and the Pus which are the tributaries of the Penganga rivers.

About Akola District
On First July 1998, Akola district was divided to form two new districts – Akola and Washim. Akola district now consists of Akola, Balapur, Patur, Barshitakli, Murtizjapur, Akot and Telhara talukas.  The district headquarter is Akola.

Akola, also called Cotton City, is known for its cotton production and is the largest cotton-producing district in India. The city is also famous for its pulses (dal), oil, and textile mills. Akola is also known for its medical facilities. This district has the rich culture and the Bhajan, Keertan, Shahiri, Gondhal, Bharud and Jogava are the major folk-arts.
