Garhwa district is bordered by river Sone on the north, Surguja district of Chhattisgarh state on the south side, Palamau district of Jharkhand state on the east side, and Sonebhadra district of Uttar Pradesh on the west side. This district covers the 4044 Sq Km area.

This district was carved out from erstwhile Palamu district by separating erstwhile Garhwa sub-division of it, On 1 April, 1991.
