Kannur District is one of the 14 districts in the state of Kerala, India. Kannur town is the district headquarters

Geography of Kannur
Kannur District is bounded by Kasaragod District to the north side and Kozhikode District and Wayanad District to the south side, The Arabian Sea lies to the west,To east side the district is bounded by the Western Ghats, which forms the border with Karnataka state, in its districts of Kodagu and Chamarajanagar.

District can be divided into three geographical regions
Highlands
Midlands
Lowlands.

Latitude of Kannur city :  11 deg 40' to 12 deg 48' North
Longitude of Kannur city :  74 dge 52' to 76 deg 07' East.

About Kannur District
Kannur district came into existence as an administrative unit on January 1, 1957. Kannur district derived its name from the location of its headquarters at Kannur town. The old name 'Cannanore' is the anglicised form of the Malayalam word Kannur. Kannur District is known as the land of looms and lores, because of the loom industries functioning in the district and festivals held in temples.

Culture of Kannur District
Kannur has been the cradle of folk art and music. Today the myriads of Kavus (small shrines) are centers of the Theyyam, a ritual dance in which men impersonate supernatural beings. Kannur can rightly be termed as the birth place of Theyyam.
