Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta, is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal.

Kolkata located on the east bank of the Hooghly River.Kolkata District is bordered by Howrah District, North 24 Parganas District and South 24 Parganas District.

Main Rivers :  Hooghly River, a tributary of the Ganges, flows through Kolkata District.

About Kolkata
Kolkata is a major center of industrial, cultural, academic, administrative and business activity.The name Kolkata was probably derived from Kalikata, one of the three villages in the area before the arrival of the British. Both Calcutta and Kolkata were most likely derived from 'Kalikata', or Kalikshetra ('Land of the goddess Kali') with the former being an anglicised version of the latter. In year 2001government of West Bengal changed the official name of Calcutta to Kolkata.

The district was carved out of the erstwhile Medinipur district on January 1, 2002.
