The district of Lahaul-Spiti in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh consists of the two formerly separate districts of Lahaul and Spiti.
Geography of Lahaul & Spiti
Lahaul & Spiti district covers the 13,833 Sq Kms or 9,11,165 Hectares area. Lahaul & Spiti is situated at an altitude of 3340 m. in the north eastern corner of Himachal Pradesh.
The valley of Lahoul is situated to the south of Ladakh. For this very reason this place derived its name “Lho-Yul” meaning "Southern Country". To its south is situated the beautiful valley of Kullu across the Rohtang Pass and the Bara Bangahal across the “Asakh” pass (5051Mtrs) . Its eastern and south eastern boundaries coincide with those of Spiti and Western Tibet across the Kunzom Pass. To its north situated the valleys of Zanskar and Ladakh across Shingola and Baralacha la respectively.Its western boundaries touch the Pangi and Churah areas of Distt. Chamba.
