Malappuram district covering an area of 3,550 sq km. Malappuram district lies in northern Kerala and is bounded on the north side by Wayanad and Kozhikkode districts, on the southeast and south side by Palakkad District, on the southwest side by Thrissur District, on the northeast side by Tamil Nadu,on the west side by the Arabian Sea, and on the northwest side by Kozhikode District.
Hills : Vavil or Vayutmala, Vellarimala, Chakkumala hills, Urothmala, Pandalur hills are the main hills of this district.
Rivers : Chaliyar or Beypore river, Kadalundi River,Purapparamba River, Tirur River, Bharathapuzha are the main rivers of Malappuram district

Malappuram District started functioning with effect from 16.6.1969. In Malappuram District consists of 2 revenue divisions, 6 taluks, 135 villages, 15 blocks, 7 municipalities and 100 panchayats. It is unique in that it is the only Muslim majority district in south India
Culture of Malappuram District
Malappuram district is famous for Oppanapattu (Muslim folksong) which is the main art form of the Muslim ladies. 'Duff muttu' and 'Kolkali' are also famous Mappila (Muslim) arts. Other religious art forms in Malappuram district are Thiruvathirakkali, Thira, Bhoothamkettu, and Margom Kali are also performed during festive public gatherings.
