Malkangiri district covers the 5,791 sq.kms area. Malkangiri District is bounded by Koraput, Vishakapattanam and East Godavari district of Andhara Pradesh in the east side, East Godavari and Khammam district of Andhara Pradesh in the South side, Bastar district of Chhattisgarh in the west side, Koraput district in the north side.

Malkangiri is a new district. This district is known for its irrigation and hydroelectricity project, called Balimela. Malkangiri district came into existence by the reorganization of districts of Orissa as per notification on 1st October, 1992 with effect from 2nd October 1992.
Malkangiri is divided into two physical sections with the eastern part covered with steep ghats, plateaus, and valleys and the rest with flat plains broken by a number of rocky wooded hills.
