Meerut district is bounded on the north side by Muzaffarnagar district and south side by district Bulandshahar and on the west side by Baghpat district. River Ganga forms its eastern boundary and separates it from the districts of Moradabad and Bijnore.

Meerut city may have derived its name from maya Rashtra, the capital of Mandodari's father or Ravana's father-in-law, Mayasura. This name may have mutated to Mairashtra, Mai-dant-ka-khera, Mairaath and eventually Meerut.
