About St. Angelo Fort
St. Angelo Fort is a massive laterite fort and well known tourist place of Kannur. It is also known as Kannur Fort or Kannur Kotta. It is triangular shaped fort and lies in the Cantonment region facing the Arabian Sea. St Angelo's fort is a most important historical monument and a passable tourist attraction. St. Angelo Fort is lies in the Cantonment area of Kannur and its facing the Arabian Sea. The fort is separated by a huge wall from the Arabian Sea. A stair case leads to the top of this wall. The structure of this fort is in the form of triangular and it made of laterite stone.
History of Fort
Dom Francisco de Almeida was built the St. Angelo Fort in year 1505. He was the first Portuguese Viceroy of India. Dutch captured the fort from the Portuguese in year 1663 and sold it to Ali Raja of Kannur in year 1772. When this Fort under the Dutch ruler then he modernised the fort and built the bastions Hollandia, Zeelandia and Frieslandia that are the prime features of the present structure.
This fort was renovated, Under the British rule during 1790 and equipped it to be their most important British station or chief military station in Malabar til 1947. This fort houses various cells, each one of which has a single hole that was used for giving food to the prisoners. Archaeological Survey of India is fairly well preserved as a protected this fort. Here Kerala Police have posted 6 Tourism Policemen for the protection and guidance to the tourists.
Near By Attraction : Moppila Bay Harbor and Arakkal Mosque are near the fort and other famous tourist attraction near St. Angelo Fort. The Mopilla Bay is a natural fishing bay.
Visiting Timing : Fort Open on All days of the week and tourists are allowed entry between 8 AM to 6 PM.
