It is celebrated as birth anniversary of Guru Nanak
Gurupurab Festival is celebrated as birth anniversary of Guru Nanak -the first or the founder guru of the Sikhs.This festival is celebrated on the full moon day of Kartika (October-November). It is also known as "Jyototsava".
There are a number of guru purabs observed in Punjab, the two major guru purabs are
Guru Nanak Gurpurab - falling in the month of Kartik (October - November)
Guru Gobind Singh Gurpurab - falling in the month of Pausa (December - January)
Akhand pathas, community feasts, kar seva and religious processions form part of the festivities. Early morning religious procession which goes around the localities singing shabads, it is also called Prabhat Pheris. On the day of festival special shabad called Asa ji di War is sung very early in the morning.
In the Nankana Sahib a grand fair and festival is held and thousand of Sikhs came here.At Nankana Sahib, there is a beautiful Gurudwara.Guru Granth Sahib is continuously read and recited in the Gurudwaras ('Akhand path') all over the country.The Sikhs from all over the world gather here and celebrate the Gurupurab every year with great devotion and enthusiasm.
