Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the adventures tourist destination of Kerala State. This Sanctuary is regarded as one of the richest forest belt in peninsular India.
Location : Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is located at a distance of 40 km from Thodupuzha in the Idukki district. This Sanctuary is situated between the Cheruthoni River and the Periyar River
About Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary
Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is perfect place for Wildlife and adventures lover. In year 1976, Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary was came into existence. It is located in the Thodupuzha and Udumbanchola taluks in Idukki district. Idukki sanctuary is spread over an area of 77 sq. km. and it is situated at an altitude of 450-748 m above sea level. The reserve heretofore comprised of evergreen forest with deciduous growth, grasslands, bamboos and marshes. The sanctuary receives heavy rainfall, with an average annual shower of about 3800 mm
The first major hydroelectric project, Idukki arch dam is also situated in the Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary. The Idukki reservoir or the lake formed by 3 dams - Cheruthoni, Idukki and Kulamavu and that is extends to 33 sq.km.
Vegetation in the Idukki Wildife Santuary : This Sanctuary the forests of White pine, Kuntherekkapine, Punnappa, Vediplavu, Maravuri, Bhadraksham, Palai, Vayana etc.
Wildlife in Idukki wildlife Sanctuary
This sanctuary is home to wild animals such as Indian bison, wild dog, boar, jungle cat, deer, elephant and bear . Main attraction of this Sanctuary is Elephants and snakes.
Animals : In this Sanctuary you see the Tiger, Sambar, elephants, wild boars, deer, wild dogs, jungle cat and bison’s.
Birds in Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary : Jungle fowl, Myna, Wood pecker, Black bulbul, Laughing thrush, Peafowl, King fisher etc.
The tourist can also avail various facilities in the sanctuary like boating, forest visit and trekking.
