Jatayu Para or Jatayu Rock is a curiously shaped huge rock. It is located at Chadayamangalam or Jadayu Mangalam, a beautiful village.Jatayu Para is a big rock and it is situated about 2000 ft above sea level. This rock is covering an area of around 60 acres. Jatayupara is an ideal place for those who love adventure they can enjoy trekking and numerous adventure activity.
On the top of the mountainous rock there is a triangular shaped tiny pond and this pond is never dries up even in the hottest summer. There is also a legend behind this pond. Some people believe that lord Rama has been created this pond when Rama pressed his feet to on the rock to give water to Jatayu who was on his last breath.
Legend about this Place : The bird, Jatayu played an important role in the epic Ramayana. According to the legend, this was the place where Jatayu, a gigantic bird of the epic Ramayana, tries to exempt Sita from the hands of Ravana and fell on the rock after being injured by Ravana and made his last breath on this rock. The large rock has been named after the bird Jatayu.
At the top of this rock there is a temple and this temple is dedicated to Lord Ram. People also believed that Jatayu Para is that place where Lord Rama his younger brother Lakshmana came to know about the kidnapping of his wife Sita. You can reached here by climbing steep steps.
Other Attraction of This Rock : Jatayu Para or Jatayu Rock is also famous as annual Crafts Festival that is conducted every year during December – January. In this festival many craftsmen came here from various parts and display their products at this temple. During this time large number of devotees came here and offer their prayers to Lord Rama.
Main and greatest attraction of the Jatayu Para is 60 ft tall,150 ft broad and 200 ft long sculpture of the Jatayu. In this sculpture of the Jatayu you see the Jatayu lying on its back with a broken wing, raising its head.
