About Festival
Bihu is the National Festival of Assam. Kati or Kangali Bihu is held on the last day of Aswin (Sep-Oct).In Assam there are basically three types of Bihu -

 

Rongali Bihu or Bohaag Bihu
Kati Bihu or Kongaali Bihu
Magh Bihu or Bhogaali Bihu.

 

Kati Bihu or Kongaali Bihu is called Kangali (poor) because there is not much to eat at this time of the year. On this day people of assam worship, pray and welcome Goddess Lakshmi (Goddess of Prosperity) at home.During this event, earthen lamps (diyas) are lit in the paddy fields and prayers are offered for the success of the crops.People continues it for a whole month.

 

Tulsi plant is raised over an earthen platform, called tulsi bheti in the local dialect, and is watered and worshipped every day.

 

Bihu festival is celebrated in all part of Assam like in Goalpara and Kamrup districts of lower Assam and in Darrang district of central Assam.This festival is also known as Bhatheli and Sori in in some parts of Assam.
