Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is an ideal place for bird lover. It is a paradise for avid bird-watchers. It is the dreamland of for the ornithologists and migratory birds.
Location : Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is situated at Kumarakom in Kottayam district , state of Kerala and approximately 31 kilometers from Alleppey. This Sanctuary is located on the banks of the Vembanad Lake.
About Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary
Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is also known as Vembanad Bird Sanctuary. This Sanctuary is spread out over 14 acres on the southern bank of the Kavanar River. In this Sanctuary you can see the large variety of different birds.Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna. 'Baker's Mansion' is also another tourist attraction of this Sanctuary. It is over 50 years old and is managed by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation. This sanctuary was also known as 'Baker's Estate'.
Birds : In this Sanctuary visitor can see the golden-backed woodpeckers, kingfishers, night herons, paradise fly-catchers and egrets. Other famous bird species are water duck, Parrots, teal, larks, owl, heron, waterfowl, flycatchers, wood beetle, cuckoo, egret and Siberian cranes.
How to visit : Tourist can explore the sanctuary by taking a boat ride, or hiring a canoe at the entrance to the sanctuary.
Best Time to Visit : An ideal time to visit this Sanctuary is between the months of November and February. During this time period migratory birds from across the globe come here for mating. To see the local birds in this sanctuary is from June to August.
Timing : You can see the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary between 10 am – 6 pm.
