Pullichira Church is first Pilgrim centre in Kollam Diocese. This Church was built on the banks of Pullichira lake in Mayyanad Panchayath. It is famous tourist attarction, due to its religious significance it attract many devotees and visitors. This church was founded by the disciples of St. Thomas the apostle.
History of Pullichira Church
The history of Pullichira Church is dates back to 16th century AD. In year 1572, the original Pullichira Church was built by the Portuguese. In this Church miraculous statue of our lady was installed at the top of the beautifully carved wooden altar. In year 1974, new church is built here and in 8th December 2004, Pullichira Church was declared Marian pilgrimage shrine.
Main Festival : This church is best known as its fest which is an annual affair. First Sunday of the Malayalam Month of Dhanu, this festival is celebrated. During this festival it attract many devotees from all over Kerala and neighbouring states. Other important feasts that are celebrated here are St. Sebastian's feast (January), Lourdes Matha feast (February), St. Joseph's feast (March), St. Antony's feast (June), Carmelite Matha feast (September) and Fathima Matha feast (October).
