About Shenduruny Wildlife Sanctuary
This Sanctuary is one of the richest floral areas of Kerala. The name of Shenduruny Wildlife Sanctuary is was originated from an endemic species of tree called Chenkurunji (Gluta travancorica). In 25-Aug-1984, Shenduruny was declared as Wildlife Sanctuary. This wildlife is a part of the Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve and is at a height of 1550 m above sea level. The sanctuary is covered with lush forest cover and has many exotic plants, some of which are medically important.
Shenduruny Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over the 100.32 Sq km area and artificial lake formed by the Parappara dam and it is sprerad over the 26 Sq km. It is a place where nature has created an environment blessed with pleasant climatic conditions.
According to archeological reports, Shenduruny was the origin of one of the oldest river valley civilization in the country. Remains of the Stone Age Culture belonging to the Mesolithic period, dating back to 5210 - 4420 BC, have been excavated from a large cave at the northwestern part of the Shenduruny River. It is the witness of the stone age culture that dates back to the Mesolithic period. There are cave paintings in the caves that resemble ones found in central India
Wildlife Attraction : This Sanctuary is a housesv of several wildlife species like Bonnet Macaque, Gaur, Sambar, Macaque, Barking Deer, Wild Boar, Three-Striped Palm Squirrel, Indian Giant Squirrel, Lion-Tailed Elephant, Mouse Deer, Tiger, Leopard, Nilgiri Langur etc.
Flora : Here 4 different type of vegetation have been found.This place is mainly covered with deciduous type plants. The thickness of the forest is exemplary and one has to cover densely covered forests to get a view of the wildlife present here
Main attraction : An artificial lake that is formed by the Parappar dam and the Kulathupuzha River is an important tourist attraction and is worth a visit. Parappara Dam, constructed across the Shenduruny and Kulathupuzha rivers. Here is the Ottakkal reservoir where pedal as well as row boating facility is also available.
