About St. Augustine Church
On 3rd September 1572, 12 Augustian monks, St. Augustine Church was built. In 1602 AD the construction of the church was completed. They built the church on the Holy Hill at Old Goa. Due to its rich historical and architectural qualities, St. Augustine Church is and has always been a pilgrim’s favourite.
St. Augustine Church today is no more than a 46 meter tall tower situated in Old Goa on a hill aptly named Holy Hill. In starting day of the church boasted of 4 altars, 8 chapels and a convent. Sadly, this church and the adjoining convent are in ruins due to the ban on religious orders passed by the Portuguese government.
