Location : Terekhol Fort is located on the Tiracol River northern of northern Goa. It is located just 42 Kms from North of Panaji.
About Terekhol Fort
Terekhol Fort is also called as Tiracol fort. In the 17th century, Maharaja Khem Sawant Bhonsle, the ruler of Sawantwadi was built this Fort. But in 1746, Dom Pedro de Almeida, he was the Portuguese viceroy, was captured the fort and rebuilt this fort. The fort was get the legal recognition as part of the Portuguese possessions in India in year 1788. Terekhol Fort was used as as a military base for an attack on the Portuguese in year 1825 by Dr. Bernado Peres Da Silva. Portuguese took over the Terekhol Fort again and the efforts of Dr. Bernado Peres Da Silva was failed.
In year 1954, Goans were shot for hoisting the Indian tricolour flag from the ramparts.
Due to its architectural style its attracts many tourists. At present time major part of the fort today is converted into a heritage hotel. Tiracol Heritage Hotel offers luxury accommodation facility to tourists.
Highlights of Fort : Here tourist can delight the small courtyard that surrounds the chapel. Tourist can also explore the fantastic view of Kalacha beach or Querim beach. They also see the Church of St. Anthony but church is not open to the general public except on certain occasions, such as the annual feast. This feast was celebrated on Month May.
