Vishu is one of the important festivals of Kerala.Vishu is similar to the New Year festivals observed elsewhere in India like Bihu (Assam),Baisakhi (Punjab), Naba Barsha (Bengal) , (Vishuva Sankranti) in Orissa, Bisu (Tulu Nadu region in Karnataka) and Puthandu (Tamil Nadu).
According to the Malayalam traditional calendar, it is the first day of Malayalam month Medam which is the astronomical New Year. Traditional rituals are followed to bring in another year of prosperity. The traditional rituals followed in the festival is believed to usher in another year of prosperity for the Keralites.
Important event in Vishu festival is the Vishukkani, which literally " the first to be seen on the Vishu day". On the day of Vishu, it’s a custom to wake up at dawn and go to the puja room with the eyes closed so that the first thing a person sees is the Vushukanni.In Kerala, the Kani in the temples of Ambalapuzha ,Guruvayur and Sabarimala are famous. Special pujas are held in these temples where the people go to worship and pray for a prosperous New Year.
In this festival Feast items include Veppampoorasam (a bitter preparation of neem) and Mampazhapachadi (a sour mango soup).
